Closing an Exchange Account Without Leaving Dust Behind
Six steps to leave a venue properly, including the small balances that cannot be withdrawn economically.
Gabriel Mas ·
Closing an account is straightforward except for the balances too small to move. Handle those first.
Step 1: export everything before you start
Full transaction history, statements, and any tax reports the venue generates. Once the account is closed, access usually ends.
This is the step that cannot be redone and the one people forget.
Step 2: find the dust
Small balances across assets you did not know you held: airdrops, referral credits, rounding from trades.
Individually too small to withdraw. Collectively sometimes not trivial.
Step 3: consolidate internally
Convert the small balances into one asset inside the venue. Internal conversion carries a spread and no network fee, which is what makes it viable at small amounts.
Several venues offer a dust conversion built for this. Use it where it exists.
Step 4: withdraw the consolidated balance
One transfer instead of many. Choose the cheapest network both you and the destination support.
Send a test first if the destination is new.
Step 5: check for anything pending
Open orders, staked or locked positions, pending deposits, and any recurring instruction still active.
A standing buy order left running against a closed funding source generates failures for months.
Step 6: close formally
Use the account closure process rather than simply walking away. A dormant account with a balance is a dormant account with a balance, and dormancy policies exist.
Keep the confirmation.
What to keep afterwards
The exports, the closure confirmation, and a note of which tax years the account covered. Authorities can ask years later and the venue will no longer be able to help.
When not to close
While an open dispute or a pending withdrawal exists. Resolve first, close second.
Also not immediately after opening the replacement. Run one full cycle at the new venue first: deposit, convert, withdraw.
Exchanges that let you practise with a small amount first make that overlap cheap. Collect & Exchange publishes its withdrawal minimums per asset, which tells you in advance what will become dust, and an exchange with a withdrawal flow you can follow without guessing is one you can leave as easily as you joined.
