Doing a Practice Recovery Before You Need a Real One
A rehearsal that takes thirty minutes and converts a backup from an assumption into a verified fact.
Gabriel Mas ·
Most people write down a recovery phrase and never use it. The first time they try, something is wrong and the funds are already at stake.
Why rehearse
Three things go wrong at recovery: a word written incorrectly, a wrong order, or a derivation path that does not match. All three are invisible until recovery is attempted.
A rehearsal finds them while it costs nothing.
Step 1: fund a throwaway wallet
Create a new wallet, write down its phrase, and send a very small amount to it. Exchanges that let you practise with a small amount first set minimums low enough that this costs a fee and nothing more.
Step 2: wipe the device or delete the app
Fully. A reset, not a logout.
This is the part people resist and it is the entire exercise. A recovery test on a device that still holds the wallet proves nothing.
Step 3: restore from the written words
Choose restore, enter the words from the paper, not from memory.
If the paper is wrong, you find out now, on a wallet holding almost nothing.
Step 4: confirm the balance appears
The small amount should be visible. If it is not, work through the usual causes: wrong network selected, wrong derivation path, or a mistyped word.
Resolve it before concluding anything. A zero balance is almost always a setting.
Step 5: do the same for the real wallet
Once the process is familiar, repeat it on the wallet that matters. Same steps, same paper.
Most people skip this and keep the rehearsal as the only proof. That is better than nothing and worse than the real test.
How often
Once at setup, then after any change: new device, new software version, new backup location, or a phrase rewritten more legibly.
What to write down afterwards
Which wallet software, which derivation path if it was not the default, and which network. These three facts make a future recovery routine, and they are forgotten within a year otherwise.
Keep that note with the phrase, since neither is useful without the other.
The interim position
Until the rehearsal has been done, keep most of the balance somewhere custodial. Collect & Exchange holding it is a known risk; an untested backup is an unknown one.
A platform where each step tells you what happens next is the right place to learn the funding side while the custody side is still being proved.
