Verifying a Wallet Download Signature in Four Steps

How to check that the wallet software you downloaded is the software the developers published.

Gabriel Mas ·

A signature check proves the file you downloaded is the file the developers released. It takes four steps and most people skip it.

Why it matters

Fake wallet software is distributed through search advertisements, lookalike domains and compromised download mirrors. It behaves normally and sends your recovery phrase elsewhere.

The signature is the only defence that does not rely on you recognising a fake.

Step 1: get the file and the signature from the official source

Both come from the same page: the installer and a small signature file, often ending in .asc or .sig. Also note the published fingerprint of the signing key.

Type the domain into the address bar. Do not reach it through a search result, which is where the fakes are.

Step 2: get the developers’ public key

The project publishes it, usually on the same page or in its repository. Import it into your verification tool.

The key’s fingerprint must match the one published. Compare it character by character against a second source if one exists.

Step 3: run the verification

A single command in a terminal on most systems, or a graphical tool on others. The output either confirms a good signature from that key or it does not.

Any result other than a confirmed good signature means stop. A warning about an untrusted key is normal and separate; a bad signature is not.

Step 4: check the checksum as well

Many projects publish a hash of the installer. Compute it locally and compare.

This catches corrupted downloads, which are harmless but confusing, as well as substituted ones.

What a failed check means

Not necessarily an attack. Interrupted downloads and mirror problems produce failures too.

The correct response is the same either way: delete it and download again from the official source.

The shortcut for people who will not do this

Buy hardware from the manufacturer and use their official application, downloaded once, kept updated through the application itself rather than re-downloaded.

That reduces the exposure to a single verified install. Until you are confident in the setup, keeping most of a balance at Collect & Exchange is a reasonable interim position, and exchanges that let you practise with a small amount first let you test the wallet with an amount you can afford to lose. A platform where each step tells you what happens next is the right place to learn the funding side while the custody side is still new.
